Hi guys, i've been growing up some blackmoor fry for a few months and now are starting to show their beautiful black colour. However, i've noticed that some do not posess the fantails like the parents did.. but instead have the single tail. I was just wondering if they can still be considered as blackmoors or not.
If u can help me out, it would be most appreciated. Cheers Johnny

The term 'moor' is actually a reference to Shakespeare's 'Othelo'. Shakespeare was under the impression that 'Moors' [people from Morocco, in Northern Africa] were 'black', that is, Negro. In actuality, they are more like arabs.... At any rate, when it comes to goldfish, only black fish are 'moors', the rest are 'butterflys', or, if the tails aren't held properly, 'telescopes'. In Japan, these fish are called 'demekin', while the Chinese name translates as 'Dragon Eye'. I think an all black, dragon eyed fish a single tail sounds quite lovely, but it shouldn't be called a 'moor'. In fact, I'd like to see that particular phrase retired from the goldfish lexicon, but I'm not holding my breath... Oru |

Didn't all single tailed variaties of "double tailed" fish used to be called Nymphs?

been years since I heard that phrase. I should drag out my old books and see if I can find anything, but right now I'm just too lazy... |

If you are planning to breed these moors, I think you should cull the single tail ones. If you're not breeding them, they could be kept as pets.
