You have to understand there have been entire books written on goldfish breeding and genetics. I can't do the subject justice in the time I have, and hope you'll explore the subject further before trying it.

Here's a rough idea of whats involved.

You really want at least 3 tanks or tubs to try breeding: one for the males, one for females, one for the babies.

You want to seperate the males and females so that you can choose which ones will be the parents. Since they eat the eggs, you want them to breed, then either remove the parents or eggs immeadiately.

All the available males will chase a female that's carrying eggs. They can do her a lot of damage if you don't have a separate place to keep her.

The anus of males is small and narrow, like a slit. The anus of females is larger, pear shaped, and often has a nipple like protrusion. 'Breeding stars' are usually only found in males: tiny protrusions like grains of sand on the cheeks, sometimes the forward edges of the dorsal and pec fins. These differences are all a little subjective, and even professionals are occasionally taken by surprise. You can't be completely certain until you see breeding activity.

Put them on a high protien diet [earth worm flakes are good], and lower their temps to the lower 60s. When the females look to be putting on weight, they are carrying eggs. Time to raise the temps a few degrees a day.

When you get back to 70, move one female and a couple of the males to the spawning tank. You'll need to provide a lot of soft plants [real or artificial] anchored to the bottom, not just floating on top. You can buy 'breeding mops' for this purpose.

THe males will drive the female through the plants. She releases the eggs, the male fertalizes, all without stopping.

As the eggs falls, they'll try to eat them. Once you think they are done, segregate them again. If you don't, the males may push the female to the point she dies of exhaustion.

You can buy chillers from any aquarium store that sells a lot of marine supplies, but they are very expensive.

The temperature trigger for spawning assures that most goldfish are born in the spring. That gives the fry the longest possible period to mature before having to face cooler temps.

If you don't have a room where you can turn off the heat [or turn up the AC], your best bet may be to wait till spring and move them outdoors...

I wish one of our more experienced breeders would chime in here, but I think you'd need at least a couple of weeks in the low 60s to convince the fish that its winter.

I don't think you could get there with water changes.
