Never seen anything on the topic of scales. Do they drop off and replace them naturally or is the dropping of scales a bad sign? I saw a dozen or so when changing the water today. Oh, that's a dozen for two fish.

That does seem like a lot of lost scales for two fish. Are they fighting? Is there anything in the tank that they might be scraping against? Usually my fish only lose scales when they bump against something or are playing too rough.
They do grow back, sometimes a different color, sometimes clear. If you keep the water clean it should be no problem for the fish. Although I had one fish lose a scale because of a cyst once, I don't know if there are any diseases that cause a lot of scale loss. Others might know. --jane |
